Plein Air Paintings 2012 - 2013

I still work directly from the Tuscan landscape in a more traditional way: outside under the sun with my easel in front of me. These piece are important to my working process since I am directly engaging with what I see and gathering visual information that also gets used in the more abstract studio-based work that I do.

I enjoy both methods of working: direct observation and a more constructed, imaginative approach.  They complement and strengthen each other. There is a shared rhythm, exploration of colour and fascination with design in all the pieces I do; despite any superficial contast of style.

I understand that some people are more drawn to my figurative depictions of the Italian countryside whereas others prefer the more experimental and abstract work.

Myself, it depends on my mood and I love them both: I really do.
